US - IRAN TENSIONS

Knocking down the leader will have a great psychological effect on the followers. That's exactly what the US has done. The tensions between US and Iran escalated when the former killed Iran's national hero and military general, Qasem Soleimani. So instead of the regular movie stuff of fighting all the gundas in middle and locking horns with the villain in climax, Trump had taken one clear shot.

He justified his move by saying that Soleimani was a terrorist, a threat to Americans and killing him had actually prevented a world war. But his comments on the former US presidents raises doubt of him implementing this plan just to gain attention of the world and especially the Americans and win the upcoming US presidential elections. He blamed Obama and Bush for indulging in bad business with Soleimani and said that he has finally saved the country from evil.

IRAN'S TURN

Soleimani might have killed Americans, developed various attack plans, but he is still a hero to the Iranians. Within 5 days of his death, they launched 12 missiles aimed at two US bases in Iraq calling it the retaliatory attack. The US is the big boy. Mess with him and you are in danger. But by this attack, Iranians have proved that they are strong enough to reciprocate. Iran claimed that over 80 American soldiers were killed but US says there were no casualties.

One thing is unclear. As individuals we fear confessing that we killed someone. But as countries? The murderers take pride in the murder while the kin does not even accept the fact simply because a death on his side would expose his weakness.

World stories apart. How will this affect India?

India is already overloaded with unsolved economic and cultural issues. This imminent war had affected the oil and gold prices in the world. The petrol price is around Rs. 78.77/L in Chennai as on 9th January, 2020. Gold prices had hit life time highs.

India is the third largest importer of oil and most of that is from the middle east countries. So instability in those areas would affect all the Indian industries dependent on oil. 10% of our oil demand is fulfilled by Iran. India-Iran bonding is same as our bond with that one shopkeeper. Just like how we buy at one single shop for years, they become our uncles and aunties, we maintain accounts and the next day, that shop is closed. Forever. Disappointing right?

India, complying with the US sanctions on Iran had stopped its imports and is finding alternative sources. But Iran was a better source in terms of cost.

Also, India is yet to take a side on this ongoing conflict as supporting one would eventually mean opposing the other and India cannot afford that.

It does not just affect the people within the boundaries but even Indians living in US and Iran. A war would put them in danger.

Can you imagine the level of impact that ONE single person in power could make!!! Keep aside your questions of whether our country is democratic or not. Do we live in a democratic world?
